Chapter Previewהַקְדָּמָה

In this aliyah, we begin the counting of the shevatim, the holy tribes of Klal Yisrael, as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. The Torah lists the families of Reuven, Shimon, Gad, Yehudah, Yissachar, and Zevulun, recording the census numbers for each tribe. Along the way, the Torah pauses to recall the tragic rebellion of Dasan and Aviram with Korach, reminding us of the consequences of machlokes, while comforting us with the news that the sons of Korach did not perish.

We then continue with the descendants of Yosef—Menasheh and Ephraim—noting the daughters of Zelophehad, followed by the families of Binyamin, Dan, Asher, and Naftali. The aliyah concludes with the grand total of the census, showing how Hashem lovingly counts His precious nation.

All introductions, summaries, and contextual notes are the editor's commentary and are not part of the original text.אַלע הַקְדָּמוֹת, סִכּוּמִים, און הערות זענען דעם רעדאַקטאָר'ס באַמערקונגען און זענען נישט קיין טייל פונעם אָריגינעלן טעקסט.

Chapter Summaryסִכּוּם

This aliyah details the census of the Jewish people, listing each tribe by its families and providing their respective population counts. It begins with Reuven, mentioning the fate of Dasan, Aviram, and Korach's assembly, and continues through Shimon, Gad, Yehudah, Yissachar, and Zevulun. The Torah then counts the descendants of Yosef through Menasheh and Ephraim, highlighting Zelophehad's daughters, before concluding with the counts for Binyamin, Dan, Asher (mentioning his daughter Serah), and Naftali, bringing the total number of enrolled Israelite men to 601,730.

לְמַעֲשֶׂהWhat To Take Home

In the middle of counting the vast numbers of Klal Yisrael, the Torah suddenly pauses to tell us a remarkable detail: "And the sons of Korah did not die." While their father and his entire assembly were swallowed up by the earth for their rebellion, these young men chose a different path. They did not let their family history, their environment, or the heavy momentum of their father's mistakes define their destiny. At the very last second, they did teshuvah and carved out a completely new path of life for themselves.

It is so easy to feel trapped by our past, our family patterns, or the mistakes we have made in our lives up until now. We sometimes think, "This is just who I am, and this is how my story has to end." But the Torah is teaching us a profound lesson in the power of choice. No matter what kind of spiritual environment you come from, and no matter how deep the mistakes of the past may run, you are never locked in. You have the power to choose life, to choose connection to Hashem, and to write a completely different chapter starting right now.

Today, when you feel pulled down by old habits, family baggage, or past failures, remember the sons of Korah. Pause for a moment, realize that your future is entirely in your hands, and make one small, positive choice that breaks the old pattern.
