In this beautiful Shir HaMa'alos, we sing of the ultimate Geulah, when Hashem will return us to Tzion and the long, painful galus will seem like nothing but a passing dream. We look forward to the day when our mouths will be filled with laughter and even the nations of the world will recognize the great wonders Hashem has done for us. The kapitel comforts us with the powerful assurance that all our tears and hard work in this bitter exile are like seeds planted in the ground, which will ultimately blossom into a joyous harvest of salvation. It is traditionally sung with great yearning before Birchas HaMazon on Shabbos and Yom Tov.
