In this moving Shir HaMa'alos, we lift our eyes up to Hashem in Shamayim, expressing our complete and utter dependence on His rachamim. Just like a servant looks to his master or a maidservant to her mistress for sustenance and protection, so too do we look only to Hashem to grant us favor and save us from our pain. We cry out to Hashem to be gracious to us, pleading that our souls have become completely saturated and weary from the constant mockery and contempt of our arrogant oppressors.
